In election years, adult leaders (who serve as role models at the highest level) often engage in vitriol, truth-twisting, and humiliation of those they “oppose.” What example does this set for our voters, let alone our children?
As humans, we tend to learn by example and through stories. We especially love stories about heroes who overcome adversity and defeat tyrants.
Many of the most popular stories often rely on combat or martial arts as a means of righting wrongs. Here are some of our favorites that fit that criteria:
- The Avengers & pretty much every superhero comic or movie
- Lord of the Rings
- Star Wars
- James Bond
- One Piece
- The Karate Kid franchise (especially Cobra Kai. Go, Miyagido!)
- Most of the Saturday morning cartoons so many of us grew up with
- Even teacher and archaeologist Indiana Jones ‘fights’ his way out of scrapes
This current election season, during an era when politics has sundered families and friendships, we have the opportunity to model good behavior and initiate healing. Frankly, it starts with us. So let's get to it!
“Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness.” —Seneca
